Fonske: Leuven’s Symbol of Student Life and Wisdom

Leuven gift featuring Fonske

The Fonske, short for Fons Sapientiae or the “Source of Wisdom,” is an iconic symbol of Leuven’s student life. This quirky statue, located at the Rector De Somerplein near the Grote Markt, captures the essence of Leuven as both a wise university city and a vibrant student hub.

Created by artist Jef Claerhout, the Fonske was gifted to the city in 1975 to celebrate the 550th anniversary of the Catholic University of Leuven.

Commissioned by Rector Piet De Somer, the statue depicts a young man holding a book in one hand, symbolizing wisdom, and pouring knowledge into his head from a glass in the other hand. The book contains formulas representing happiness in its broadest sense—an apt reflection of student life, where wisdom and joy go hand-in-hand.

Much like Brussels’ Manneken Pis, Fonske is occasionally dressed up by local associations for celebrations, making it a beloved and interactive part of Leuven’s culture.
