A Modern Symbol of Science & Innovation
Towering over Leuven’s Ladeuzeplein, the Totem is a breathtaking modern art installation that fuses art, science, and technology. Designed by renowned Belgian artist Jan Fabre, this 23-meter-high steel needle features a magnificent jewel beetle at its peak, captivating visitors with its dynamic colours and symbolism.
A Gift to Leuven in Celebration of KU Leuven’s 575th Anniversary
Commissioned as a gift from KU Leuven to the city, the Totem was unveiled to mark the 575th anniversary of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. As an emblem of scientific progress and technological advancement, the sculpture represents curiosity, transformation, and discovery, mirroring the university’s commitment to knowledge.
A Masterpiece of Craftsmanship
The creation of the beetle itself was a meticulous process:
- 🛠️ Crafted in a Rotterdam studio, requiring 2.5 years of work.
- 🎨 Specially developed paint replicates the iridescent hues of a real scarab beetle, shifting colours as viewers move around it.
- 🏗️ Made of polyester, ensuring a lightweight yet striking presence atop the towering steel needle.
