Dieric Bouts, is back in Leuven for the City Festival

Famous painter, Dieric Bouts, is back in Leuven for the cultural city festival between 22 September 2023 to 14 January 2024. M Leuven will present a major retrospective on Dieric Bouts in the context of the 'New Horizons | Dieric Bouts Festival'

Dieric Bouts (c. 1410-1475) may have studied under Rogier van der Weyden, and his work was influenced by van der Weyden and Jan van Eyck. He is one of the most influential Flemish Masters.

In the mid-15th century, Leuven was experiencing a great boom, both economically and culturally. The university had just been founded, the foundation stone of the city hall had just been laid and the construction of St Peter's Church was halfway underway. That's why the city of Leuven must have seemed attractive to Bouts, as an ambitious young painter, to live in.

In 1472, Bouts was appointed city painter in Leuven. He lived in a house on Minderbroedersstraat 5, now KU Leuven's 'Eygen Heerd' building. Bouts was a genius at drawing viewers deep into his landscape compositions. The two of Bouts’ masterpieces are still on display at St Peter’s Church in Leuven: The Last Supper and The Martyrdom of Saint Erasmus.

His works can be seen at world-class museums such as the Paris Louvre, Madrid’s Prado, The National Gallery in London, San Francisco’s Fine Arts Museum, and the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.

Catchy Sights created several products for this significant city festival.

We created patterns inspired by the tiles on the floor of both of his very famous artworks; Christus Bij Simon de Farizeer and Laatste Avondmaal. We used those patterns on the stone magnet. Thus, by making nostalgia, we carried the pattern from the past to the present. We wanted to give the feeling that we were holding a piece of tiles coming from the past.

Our other product is the handmade bookmark. It is a linocut work inspired by the beautiful woman who stands out in his painting. It was designed as a bookmark but can take its place in a frame or be used as a postcard. The choice is yours.
