An Ancient Brewery is a Protected Heritage

Den Grooten and Den Cleynen Cruywaeghen (1421-1795) were a brewery and an inn in the center of Leuven, at Mechelsestraat. Two buildings stand side by side that were known in the early years of the 15th century as the brewery "de Vloghel" and house "de Wan". In 1421 Den Cruywaeghen, was known as one of the larger breweries in Leuven.

Commercial establishments were installed in both buildings in the 19th century. In 1996 Den Grooten Cruywaeghen became a protected heritage site of the Flemish Community; Den Cleynen Cruywaeghen followed in 2001.
