Arenberg Castle in Leuven

Arenberg Castle: A Historic Jewel in Leuven’s Green Campus

A Rich History Dating Back to the 14th Century

Nestled in the lush Arenberg Park, Arenberg Castle (Kasteel van Arenberg) is a stunning architectural masterpiece in Leuven, Belgium. Originally built in the 14th century by the Lords of Heverlee, this castle stands as a fine example of traditional brick and sandstone architecture.

The Influence of the van Croy and Arenberg Families

For over two centuries, Arenberg Castle remained under the ownership of the van Croy family, who transformed it with a blend of Renaissance and Neo-Gothic styles. In the 17th century, the estate passed to the Duke of Arenberg through Anna van Croy. One of its most notable owners, Louis Engelbert of Arenberg, known as “the blind duke”, was a great patron of the arts and sciences.

His descendants carried on his passion for knowledge, and in 1916, Duke Engelbert Maria of Arenberg generously donated the castle and its surrounding 29-hectare park to KU Leuven.

A Center for Science & Innovation
