An Iconic Landmark in Leuven
The Old Town Hall of Leuven (Stadhuis) is one of the most remarkable Gothic town halls in the world. With its elegant towers and intricate façade, this historic structure is an unmistakable symbol of Leuven’s rich heritage.
A Journey Through History
The first Town Hall of Leuven was originally located at the Old Market Square. However, as the city grew, the need for a larger and more representative building led to the construction of the current Town Hall in 1439. The exterior masonry and roof were completed in 1460, with the entire structure finished by 1469.
Over the centuries, the Town Hall underwent several renovations, most notably in the 19th century, due to the effects of ageing and weathering. During World War I, the building sustained minor damages, but it was largely preserved. However, a bomb strike in World War II inflicted additional damage, and it wasn't until 1983 that the restoration was fully completed.
Architectural Splendor
The Town Hall boasts three main floors, each lined with pointed Gothic windows. One of its most striking features is the collection of 235 statues, carefully arranged in canopied niches along the façade. While the niches and corbels are part of the original 15th-century design, the statues themselves were added relatively recently.
In 2020, a statue of King Leopold II was removed from the building due to its controversial historical significance. Today, the remaining 235 statues represent key historical figures, categorized as follows:
- First floor: Prominent figures from Leuven’s history, including scientists, artists, and scholars.
- Second floor: Patron saints and symbolic figures.
- Third floor: Counts of Leuven and Dukes of Brabant from different periods.
