De Kotmadam of Leuven

De Kotmadam: Leuven’s Iconic Statue on Oude Markt

A Tribute to Leuven’s Student Life

Located in the heart of Oude Markt, De Kotmadam (The Landlady) is a beloved statue that pays homage to Leuven’s rich student culture. Created by sculptor Alfred Bellefroid, the statue was unveiled on May 16, 1985, and has since become an eye-catching symbol of student life in Leuven.

Who is De Kotmadam?

In Flemish slang, a “kot” refers to a student room, and a “Kotmadam” is the landlady who rents out rooms to students, often taking on a caring role by preparing meals, tidying rooms, and offering support.

A Gift to the City of Leuven

The idea for the statue came from the Marktrock committee, and it was later gifted to the city by the Tourism Office of Leuven. At its inauguration, the then-oldest Kotmadam in Leuven, Maria Swerts, was present as the godmother of the statue, adding to its cultural significance.

Mixed Reactions & Growing Popularity

Despite its charming and humorous appeal, the statue initially received mixed reactions. Many locals expected a traditional Kotmadam—typically older and full-figured. Instead, the statue depicts a youthful, attractive woman, which does not match the stereotypical image.

However, over time, De Kotmadam became a beloved part of Leuven’s cityscape, attracting countless visitors who pose for fun photos with this iconic figure.
