Zoology Museum in Leuven: Home of the Whale Skeleton

The Zoology Museum (Museum voor Dierkunde) in Leuven is tucked away on Charles Debériotstraat, right next to the city park. Though often overlooked, it is one of Leuven’s most fascinating free attractions.

A Whale Above Your Head

The museum’s highlight is the impressive bowhead whale skeleton, which hangs dramatically from the ceiling. Remarkably, the whale skeleton even survived a WWII bombardment, making it not just a natural wonder but also a piece of Leuven’s wartime history.

A Collection of Curiosities

Visitors can explore rows of glass cabinets filled with preserved animals, from exotic species to familiar wildlife, offering both education and wonder for adults and children alike.

Practical Information

The KU Leuven Zoology Museum is free to visit on weekdays, making it an easy and enriching stop for students, families, and curious explorers.
