The Oldest Local Radio of Leuven :RADIO SCORPIO 106 FM

Radio Scorpio, a small, independent radio station, began broadcasting on October 15, 1979, from a student room using a makeshift antenna.

The station, which operated from a tiny studio on Van Evenstraat, faced numerous challenges due to the illegality of free and local radios at the time. In February 1980, the gendarmerie raided Scorpio, confiscating its equipment, which led to a protest.

The name "Scorpio" stands for "Socio-Cultural Organization for Regional and Pluralistic Information Transfer," reflecting its commitment to progressive values. The station offered a mix of information, often for students and local residents, and eclectic, alternative music, all without advertising, embodying the spirit of May 1968.

Over the years, Scorpio faced various challenges financial, and technical issues. Despite all the ups and downs, Radio Scorpio remains active and continues to broadcast on 106 FM, though it has moved to different locations over the years. Currently, it operates from Hall 5, with plans to return to the STUK cultural center in the future.
