The Bronze Duck (De Dijle Eend) in Leuven

The Bronze Duck (De Dijle Eend) in Leuven

The Bronze Duck (De Dijle Eend) is a charming and lesser-known piece of public art in Leuven. Created in 2003 by renowned Belgian sculptor René Rosseel, this small bronze sculpture is located in Redingenstraat and functions as both a drinking fountain and a playful symbol of good luck.

The Bronze Duck was commissioned by the local residents’ association of Redingenstraat to enrich the neighbourhood and add a touch of character to the street. Since then, it has become a beloved local detail, especially for those who enjoy discovering hidden gems in Leuven.

More than just a decorative artwork, the Bronze Duck is part of a light-hearted ritual said to bring good fortune to those who follow it:

  1. Rub the duck’s back three times.

  2. Gently hold its tail with your little finger.

  3. Walk around the fountain to the black knob on the ground and press it.

  4. Drink from the fountain while making a silent wish.

Nestled in the historic Redingenstraat, the Bronze Duck is a delightful example of Leuven’s playful public art and a reminder that small details often carry the most charm.
